Doing Good by Design
Guide for Systems Change
Good design and social innovation are not new concepts – they have been around for a long time. What is valuable in this moment is understanding how using designthinking, social innovation and systemic practice in a time of complexity and rapid change can help create greater impact for children and young people
The purpose of the Doing Good By Design – Guide for Systems Change is to provide practical guidance to the ‘youth ecosystem’, including initiatives, collaborations, service organisations, and community-controlled and place-based services, that are working to improve outcomes with and for children and young people.
The Guide is being developed in the spirit of collaboration; it recognise’s and amplify’s the existing knowledge, tools and practices already in the ecosystem. It is being collaboratively authored and will include:
- Guidance to help build practical design capabilities – including frameworks, methods, and practices that empower organisations to: build their capability to diagnose challenges; make sense of complex systems; understand and apply relevant frameworks; centre the perspectives of children, young people and communities; and design impactful solutions.
- Case studies for knowledge sharing – demonstrating that working differently is possible.
These will include stories of success, where organisations and collaborations have designed initiatives that draw on good process design and centred youth leadership (see below).
The Development, curation, and testing of the Guide is being led by Jane Hunt (Emergent Action) and Dr Fiona McKenzie (Orange Compass).
